300 win mag ammo question
#1
I recently purchased a Browning BAR Safari 300 win mag from KSL, more like stole for the price hehehe, but I'm not sure of the ammo I should shoot. I hunt every year for mule deer and the last 4? years for elk. I've always used 180 in my old 30-06 for both because that is all I know. I never understood why somebody could be so excited about a gun until I bought this one, it is so beautiful!!!
Anywho, I've been checking out hunting forums and such and doing research on 300 win mags and it seems that 180 grain bullets are preferred over 150. The 150 out of the 300 win mag is more 'powerful' than my 180 out of my 30-06. I'll spare hunting the hunting stories about the -06.
I've never had to shoot over 200 yds with my -06 and that was at a muley that dropped like a rock but I've shot at elk closer than that and thank God Bearclaw had a snow machine [Wink].
I feel like I just had a new born baby and don't know what to do with it, lol. I'd like to shoot the same grain bullet every time, deer, elk, target practice, whatever.
Any advice, stories, hunting trips, etc. let me have it if you don't mind.

I use 180 grain Federal power shocks in my 300 win mag on deer elk and antelope and I absolutely love them.
I reload for all my other guns but found these beauties before I started to reload and they work so well on everything I thought why change. I hope this helps. Also they dont waste much meat on anything and the knockdown is phenomenal.

Good Post! I also just purchased a 300 Win Mag in the Ruger Hawkeye Sporter. I'm pretty excited to try it out too. Lets hope we get some more replies on this topic.

I shoot a 300 WSM with 165 gr. Hornady SP flat base at 2990 fps.
These are hand loads and they have put 3 bulls and 2 deer in the freezer in the last 3 years.
I'm completely happy with the 165s

I own a 300 win mag (browning as well). After owning and shooting many different calibers, this is THE best I have ever used.

I about shot the 180 grain with great results. I have also shot the smaller grains as well with no problems.

If it was me, I would go with the 165 (probably a little better velocity).

Having said this, the main thing I would do, regardless of the grain you choose, is buy several boxes and shoot often.

You will love the gun. I have killed elk, bear, and antelope with mine and could not have been happier with the results.

Good luck!!!

Thanks,You just brought up an old wonderful memory of my Dad taking me on my first Deer Hunt. He Carried a 300 win mag,I remembered that first shot from that Gun. Talk about a cannon, I was 12 not old enough to hunt yet but hanging out with him. I was standing to the side of him and as I remember it the ground shook, the thunder deffend me and the concusion pushed me to the side.

I absolutely love my Remington XCR 300 Win mag. it shoots wonderfully and oh whata pretty gun. I like the 180 grain bullet for almost anything but have found that the 165 grains bullets shoot much flatter at distances over 400 yards. and have seen with other guns i own that i have to be consistent on the brand in my old .308 the federals grouped differently than the winchesters?? so i make sure i buy the same bullets that i have sighted my gun in on.

I'm going to try the 165 grain. I took it out last weekend and shot 150 and 180, both shot nice but I was only shooting 100 yds. What amazed me was that the recoil was no more than my 30-06.

If you're not taking longer shots I'm a big fan of the barnes tripple shock bullets. I could only get them to group at 3/4" at 100 however. It's good enough to kill an animal but I'm a little rediculous about leaving one ragged hole at 100. I knocked the snot out of a small bull a few years ago with a .308 at about 200 yds. It dropped right where it stood and the top half of the heart was hamburger, both lungs were exploded and both sides of the rib cages were blood shot. I was impressed with that bullet and will use more of it once I get time to find the load that will shoot better in my rifles.

My wife bought me a Win. Model 70 in the 300 mag for a Christmas present several years ago with a 6X Leupold scope and I love it. I shoot 180 grain Winchester bullets in it and have taken several elk, a bull moose and a couple bucks. I took my elk at 349 yards and my moose at 200, the bucks have varied from 75 yards to 175. I took a cow on the Deseret at 200 yards on the run a year ago ( witnessed by a couple of the guides) and piled her up. I don't use it on all my hunts as I still favor my old 30-06 in a model 70 that I bought new in April 1970 for most of my deer hunts and antelope when I draw.
