October is half way over and there are still records being broken. I love to sit talk fishing and have a cold one with just about anybody…most of the talk is about fishing records right? Well this October we are talking more about record temperatures unfortunately, however the fishing is still pretty darn good this month so the records still may fall.
In Florida Bay the past full moon and new approaching season seems to have driven the small Tarpon away from the pot holes and finger channels they were holding in for now but record temperatures and calm mornings might bring them back.
This weekend we fished the Key Morada Junior tournament out of Islamorada and I had the pleasure to fish with Morgan Bodem and her father Jeff, the day started with some small Reds and Ladyfish in the packed finger channels up near Snake Bight then we moved to an area I knew that would be holding good numbers of Snook, after 20 minutes of looking there they were nice schools of Snook most all around 27 to 29 inch size. With only a little bit of help from her dad Morgan managed to land 3 nice Snook all around 27 inches good job Morgan. After that the bite slowed a bit with the changing of the tide and afternoon sun heating up things however we did manage to find some nice Reds in potholes but no takers.
This week we should find the large Tarpon in deep water off the west coast and some Cobias will start to show up in the usual spots with water temps starting to fall a bit.
With water temps dropping into the mid 80s Permit are showing up in large numbers in
South Biscayne Bay most fish are floating and cruising slowly with their dorsal fins just above the water, some are in schools doing the same thing this is an excellent opportunity to try them on a fly rod, we have many shots and a few hook ups in the last few days on fly, but fishing time is early and will end by 11 am. If you are not in the sport of fly fishing, spinning gear is ALMOST a guarantee with a live crab as long as the angler does not spook the fish.
Bonefish are mudding on the Oceanside flats from Angelfish creek to Sands Cut on the first part of the incoming tide, today we saw a couple of large schools and many single
With some nice double digit bones tracking flies well but no takers. We have only been
Throwing flies the past few days with a couple over 10 lbs in for pictures on fly.
Certain flats in Florida Bays are loaded with large Snook in real shallow water.
These guys are pounding what’s left of the large mullet run we had this year, in the mix are scattered Redfish along with a few nice trout. Also some shore lines are also packing in the Snook but these guys are a little smaller the ones on the flats. A Berkley gulp jerk shad is a good bait for all and the will eat just about any color.
We also had a shrimp hatch in Florida bay last week on a high water day, the hatch lasted for 2 days from what I saw, I was informed of the hatch the first day and went back the second to jump over 20 Tarpon in 4 hours and had countless strikes on fly, we managed to bring one to the boat of about 70 lbs on fly rod but the fish broke the tippet just before the camera came out!
Good luck. Capt. Jim Hale
