Portable ice shelter ?s
#1
How does the fabric on the Clam Shelters compare the Cabelas even though they are made by Clam. I fish with a 3 year old and will have two going with me in another couple of years. I am looking at the new Clam Summit or the Comand Post. A possible overnight w/o the kids but with 1 or 2 others. Is there much difference between these and the Eskimo other than the removable windows? I generally walk to fish. Will a small budy heater be enough heater when it is 10 degrees outside?

thats a pretty adventureous trip for a 3 year old toddler?

that a side, I dont know if you would get the amount of heat needed for a toddler with out afixiation in a clam to sleep over night.

I dont have the experience that some of our other hard water anglers in this area of taking kids out over night.

Maybe when Flagman sees this he can shed some light on this for you....

I know he dose over night and week trips on the ice...

I wouldn't want a gas heater in a tent either due to CO problems. Think mummy bag if staying ovenight, or just find a hotel.[cool]

When having an overnighter there will be no heat unless I can find one that sits outside and blows hot air in. The Buddy heaters have an oxygen sensor that is suppose to shut off the heater if the oxygen gets to low. I will not trust one of them as I sleep but may take a carbon monoxide sensor as a backup. The 3 year old would rather be outside than in and goes everywhere with me. I just need to keep him warm if it turns real cold, windy, or snowy. He is too active to stay still in a 3 man shelter. What works to put on the ice inside a shelter that is light to keep it warmer and is easly moved?

If you cant be talked out of it, take a small generator. seversl electric heet lamps that you can hang from the roof.. stay away from floor modles cuz you can burn it out on the ice and the boy can burn him self trying to get worm again, eletricution is posible as well.

do a pratice run at home to see how many lights you need. Be sure to pack him a suitable sleeping bag and several changes of clothing. active boys get wet and dont know anything about frost bite wich can set on in minutes on tender skin of a three year old.

Be prepaired to leave every thing behind at a moments notice for the emergency run to the hospitol..

a carbon monoxide detector will not tell you the level of safe air you have, it only detects the pressents of carbon in the air... That my friend is a fools bet.

15-20 minuts is all it takes for carbon monoxide to over take you. We get a number of deaths every year in michigan just on day trips by guys who think they have a handle on it.

I do not expect to take the 3 year old over night for a few more years. What works well to insulate the ice in a fold up shelter?Foam backpack pad, Tarp?

glad to hear you say your not taking him, I would have woried over it for the next six months...

"quick and easy answer" either will work if you are not using a cot, but be sure to use plastic under wich ever you decide to use, and when you are sleaping pull your clam back or put the sled over top the hole if you are not spearing so you have more sleeping room with no wories of getting your self or bedding wet.

camping on the ground in the woods is the same as camping on the ice. cold radiates up.

either one will work good. you are on the right track. you can use a tarp but you need to put a layer of plastic between the tarp and the ice. its not a bad idea to do the same under a foam roll pack. a foam roll pack will draw up water from melting ice.

when camping a vaper barrier between your bedding and the ground is ecential... In the wild pulled grass and or pine and bark would have been used.

during times of extreem cold deer will walk miles to nestel in under thick low bowed pines with a good bed of neadles under neith.

Personaly, I have found a colman white gas lantern enuff light and heat for my self in a shanty, I would never trust it as a heat sorce while I sleep.

haveing dealt with monoxide poising myself I can tell you first hand it sneeks up on you more quietly than a buz from the sweetest of smooth wines.

it dosnt matter the sorce of the fumes, lantern, heater, generator furnance in the house with the flume blocked.

I do know one thing, if I were to stay the night sleepin on the ice, I would want a light on..

THE GENERATOR OUT SIDE THE SHANY DOES WORK JUST MAKE SURE THE CORDS AND GENERATOR ARE OFF THE ICE AND ALL CONNECTIONS TAPPED UP..THE SMALL HONDA GENERATORS ARE LIGHT WEIGHT AND VERY QUITE..YOU CAN RUN A LIGHT SMALL HEATER AND RADIO OF THEM..THATS ENOUGH

my aunt has one of those little hondas, it only runs a couple things, she runs the furnes or the well and a light when the power goes out at her house, I think it only weight about 25-30 pounds. has two 110 15 amp outlets.

It runs for about 8-12 hours on one fill up. Pretty dicent preformance for the price I thought...

your talking a small tv and a heater for a non mobile shanty, man thats the cats meow... Move it on over grumby old men... lol

Great discussion. I own a Clam Command Post. We usually just use it as a warming hut for the family. We even take the two year old out and put a play pen inside with blankets for when he wants to take a nap. I put a pretty big heater inside and we can get the temps up pretty high. I always leave the air flaps open and even crack the door to make sure there is enough air flow.

A couple of times a year I do stay overnight in the Clam Command Post. We use cots with a pad to get up off the ice. I also have a -10 degeree bag that I use and stuff with hand warmers. When I get ready to go to sleep I just turn off the heater and hunker down in my mummy bag for the night. I am always toasty warm as long as I sleep in dry clothes. I never risk leaving the heater on for the night. We have camped out in as cold as -15 with no real problems.

How long does to take to setup the Command post where it has 1 roof and 2 additional wall sections compared to a regular 6'X6' one. I will be doing it all by myself. I love the size but not sure I want to drag that much more weight for 3 me and 2 kids. That is why I may go with the Summit where it it 70"X96". I an going to build a new sled to haul the gear in that is less than 70" long but 24"wide and a 48" long box. I have one now that is 30" long (40" runners) and it is not quite long enough. With 2 runners it pulls 2 to 3 times easier than my 5' long molded sled. I wish I had a 4 wheeler to pull it.
I took the tub sled with the 2 year old last year so he could ride and sleep on the foam couch cushion. How big of a heater? I have a single tank buddy heater or a 12,000 btu heater/cooker to heat it with.

I can set up the command post in about 10 minutes by myself. I use a cordless drill to speed up the anchor screw process. I can't compare it to anything else because it is the only pop up I have ever set up.

I have the heater/cooker heater.
