Island Park Res. Report
#1
Wow, took me awhile to just log on and find the Idaho forum. Anyway, back on 11-3-07 I had the best fishing trip of my life and wanted to share it.

I was elk hunting up in 62A and brought the boat as a backup to fish Henry's if the elk hunting was slow. It was slow so I went to Henry's in the afternoon. I wanted to try for my dream fish (10 # or better) but didn't like the looks of things there (murky water and wind starting).

I turned and headed for Is. Park Res. even though I had never caught a fish there and it had been so many years since I had been there that I would be lost. I was alone which is normal for me.

I eventually found Buttermilk launch but nobody was there and water looked clear but low in a spooky way. I was about to leave when a Fish & Game officer came by and lined me out. Her name was Shelly and I thank her for her information and courtesy.

I trolled one of the popular areas on the north end of the lake and with a couple colors of rapala on, eventually got a hit. I reeled in a nice six pound rainbow. The next one was four pounds, then a small one at 17.5", then a dream fish (10.14 # hybrid dry weight four hours later). I finished out my limit with a six fish total of 30.5 pounds! This all happened in a about 3 hours total. There was a witness when I got back to the ramp if anybody needs that sort of thing. The big one is currently at the taxidermist. I think it is one of those Henry Lake hybrids that escaped.

The photos include the big one with a 9 volt battery and mosquito repellent bottle to help scale it. The nice six pount rainbow is shown on the cooler. The inside cooler shot does not include the trophy since he was wrapped and laid flat for the taxidermist. The fillet shot is also just the "small" ones.

By the way, I made two trips back since then with buddies and caught only one fish (four pounds) so it was indeed some sort of fluke.

I can't wait to try the ice fishing.

Great Report and Pics. Island Park can be a moody place. I have had a couple really good days ice fishing, but for every good day I have had 10 slow ones. With hogs like that one out there I would imagine ice fishing will be a little more crowded.[cool]

Great Fish

Good luck on the rest of your elk hunt. Those fillets in your picture sure are a nice pink color, should be good eating. Do all the fish from that lake have such dark pink meat? WH2

Wow! I think you win the "Best Fish Story" of the year! Congrats. Everyone who is an avid fisherman deserves to have at least one day of fishing like you experienced. And to think you almost passed on it! Thanks for sharing with us. No one will think of Island Park Res. in quite the same way again. Mike

Congratulations again on the fish. Too bad you were not able to repeat the results. When you find out what is in the big ones stomach I would like to hear about it if you don't mind sharing.
Good luck on the elk hunt.

I have caught many good sized fish in Island Park. My largest was a 10 1/2 pd rainbow in Trudes Bay. But that was before the dam repairs. It is on my wall.

Mike,

Thanks. I will go with the saying "I'd rather be lucky than good". At any rate, I honestly hope you and the rest of the folks congratulating me live to have a similar day. I am still pinching myself. I suppose that I paid my dues with numerous skunk jobs and humbling experiences.

Good luck.

FG (& Poky-man),

Thanks for the information on Shelly. Good people are good people and sometimes they originate in California.

Nice fish. It is good to see that a few big ones made it at Chesterfield. I fished there not long ago and could only catch 10 to 15 inchers.

Nice fish flygoddess. If Chesterfield has enough water for a few years it can grow some nice fish. Hopefully this winters snow pack is above average so the fish grow fat.
