[#002850]Bait_Caster and myself have been aching to get down to the Berry for some of that highly advertised shallow minnow chucking cut fishing. So, with much planning and high expectations, we made the trip down today and had a royal ball.
After getting lots of good info from the likes of MGB, petty4life, and especially piscispersuit, we went pretty prepared. Man, what a cool Web site this is. Saved me like two years of time on the water to make our day good today.
BC borrowed his neighbor’s boat and told him that he couldn’t come because Old_Coot was taking his place. That Trophy boat is one NICE ride man. Except that the Lowrance fish finder didn’t work so we substituted a larger one in it’s place. The connections worked and we had good screen results but since the head was much bigger, we just propped up in place to get by. [/#002850]

After Rube Golburging the fish finder, we were finally in the water at 7:00. We were tossing Ghost Brown Pointers and Aurora Brown Pointers into the weeds. We found a couple VERY NICE holes that I hope to visit again in the future. But then again, I hear those fish move a lot.
I had the hot stick today. BC boated 15 cuts and I boated 21 cuts. Not bad for a couple of newbies. I caught three over the slot: 23, 24, and big ole 26er that weighed 7 lbs. Man, that fishery never ceases to amaze me. Those are some healthy good looking fish.
Today, rather than let the wind get the best of us, we would just anchor up in weeds about 10 feet deep and cast with the wind WAY down along the shore. Two out of thee casts would produce lots of weeds on the hooks. But there are still plenty of cuts after those pointers when weeds aren’t on them.
BC boated about five of his catch by vertical jigging tubes tipped with chub and I got one that way. We found a good “hole” that we pulled them out of.
We left for home around 4:00 tired from casting all day and sun burnt.
ScottieB and Fish-N-Coach were also down there in Scottie’s boat. I’ll let them share their report.
Man, what a great day on the Utah water.

Nice report Ralph but I can't believe you passed up a chance to fish the big blue lake for those Berry cutts[ ]. Hard to believe those are the same fish that come from BL, what a difference in color. Way to go on those big ones, sounds like you and Terry and a great day.

I've been a hunter all my life and consequently from the 1st of October thru about the middle of November, I put away the fishing stuff and hunt every weekend instead of going fishing.
But its posts like yours that make a man want to change his mind!
Excellent report!

Thanks for the report Old Coot, my boss and I are heading up to the Berry today so your report is helpful and timely. I have a couple of LC Pointers, but also work about 100 yds from Sportsman's, so I might head over and get the pattern you were using. What size were you using?

[#002850]Troll boy, if you are talking about getting your ghost brown Pointers from Sportsmans in Riverdale, forget it ... the last two are in my tackle box. However, they do have plenty more of the Arora Brown that I caught most of mine on.
The size is 78SP.

I work near the Sportsman's in Provo--although usually when someone posts a specific pattern for anything, you have to get over there pretty fast to get one before they are all gone. I suppose just about any pattern will work. I have a black and silver one and a rainbow trout. We'll see if I can get either of the brown ones.

I too was fishing the berry on Monday and got blown off the water in my little 8 ft tin can boat. So we relocated to less wind and casted pointer 78's from shore and we nailed them. Caught 10+ in an hour and a half (the other guy was a newby or we would have been closer to 15). We caught 8 of them or so in 30 min in one spot. The best colors by far are the ghost brown and the aurura gold I believe it is. The rainbow one didn't do as well - it seems as if the cutts are looking for something with a little more color right now (yellows, brown, orange). One of the fish I caught was the most beautiful fish that I have landed from the berry. I was 100% sure it was a hybrid cuttbow and it was about 22"s. I have fished the berry for years now and have caught hundreds of fish there and it was definitely part cutt and part bow. I wish I would have had a camera to take a pic. I wil post a question in this subject. All fish were released.

I know what you mean about focusing on hunting instead of fishing but after last weekend at the berry I'm a changed man [cool].
As far as the pointers go, they are nice....and expensive. The berry doesn't seem like it would eat lures like other lakes but I find that the Rapala X-raps work just as good, not as much detail as the Pointers but I've caught several different species on them. Jordanelle is holding three LC pointers for me, I refuse to buy another one. I suggest saving $10 and buy the x-rap, replace the trebles with VMC or Gami and you're good to go. (A little dab of superglue on the tailfeather works if you don't want to change hooks, after a few fish they tend to get 'all feathered out') I've lost three out of my stock at one certain reservoir, two to fish and one to stupidity. The price of one LC pointer. Sorry if I've wondered off the subject but I know most of you guys wince at paying < $15 for a lure and would like an alternative that is just as good. Let's hear it for the poor man's pointer HOORAY ]

Nice work fellas. It's hard to make the truck drag the boat anywhere else this time of year.

Don't rapalas have vmc hooks on them already? I'm pretty sure they do--even if the don't actually slap their name on it, but I could be wrong. I have to admit that I also-like some others-have always thought that rapalas--particularly the small xraps are everybit as effective as a pointer. Anyway, just as I had predicted, when I went to Sportsman's they were all out of ghost brown pattern. I ended up getting ghost minnow--pretty close to the same. They did have aurora gold, but thought I was supposed be be looking for aurora brown so I didn't buy one. Either way, we went up there and out on the water (my boss and me) at about 3:30. Wind was pretty substancial and to make matters worse his electric trolling motor puttered out. no problem though we took on the challenge of boat control as best we could, found a slightly more protected spot and started casting. He was using a 3in silverish tube on a 1/4 oz. jig and I was using the rich-man's pointer. I probably cast the pointer 75 times the whole time we were there and never got so much as a nibble. I tried fishing at different speeds, stop and to, ripping it, you name it. Meanwhile my boss caught two with his tube. I switched to the same setup as him, but it seemed to me that the tube was diving a little too fast. I moved to 2 inch white tube on an 1/8 oz jig and got one on my first cast. I caugt a couple more over the next half hour or so--often losing the fish at the boat--a testament to having good sharp hooks (I need to start making my own jigheads) I don't know if others have this same problem of sometimes wanting a bigger hook with less weight on the jig head or vice versa. Anyway, we stayed out until just before dark, wind and all. The purveyors of "absolutely no handling of fish" would be proud in that the majority of our fish came unbuttoned at the boat while trying to snap a quick picture in the water. We caught one cut over the slot, but all of the cuts and one rainbow were all REALLY thick and seemed super colorful and healthy looking. All fish, like it or not, were released. I don't have pics and am now writing this from Orlando where in less than 36 hours I will be out on the indian river lagoon fishing for redfish and speckled trout.--A great fishing week for me. Strawberry on tuesday, fly to florida on wednesday, fishing the flats on friday, fishing blue water on Monday. I have the best wife in the world!

New to berry. Is a fly fisherman able to catch fish, from the bank,
throwing a streamer?
Thanks.
