Prey species in sw Idaho
#1
Can anyone tell me what the prey species in the sw Idaho lakes most are? I'm about to order a bulk batch of spoon blades to paint and dress up, and I'm torn between silver or brass. I used brass almost exclusively in se Idaho, and did well. They must have imitated carp, brown and/or cut fingerlings. Not so sure what the prey species mostly are here in the sw corner, though. I will be fishing the Snake, CJ Strike, Brownlee, Lake Lowell, etc. Not sure what minnows abound in the water, if there are crawdads, etc.

I'm don't know as much about that side of the state but I will tell you what I do know. Maybe some of the other guys will be able to give you some more ideas.
There are crawdads. Smallmouths really like crawdads. There are also shiners and sculpin in the snake river. I think that Crappie minnows would also be a top prey species.
Silver and brass would both work well. I like to use silver more than brass. I think the presentation and location of the lure is generally going to make a much larger difference than if it is silver or brass. Good luck.

Brian,
Thanks for the info. It sounds like either will work well. I must be an oddball, because I have always preferred brass. I have had consistently better luck with it in the south fork of the Snake, but the 'bows in the north fork preferred really shiny silver. I think you're correct, though, in the presentation being the key. Thanks again.
