What does a fishing guide at Lake Fork do for vacation? If you’re a lunker bass junkie like me, you fish Lake Baccarac in Mexico, where the unpressured big bass are numerous and gullible! On December 3-7, we basically had 30,000 acres of big bass paradise to ourselves. Between the 8 of us, the unofficial tally is 2 12 pounders, 3 11s, 5 10s, 5 9s, plus a number of 7s and 8s and a lot of 5s and 6s. Best of all, most of the big ones came on topwaters and big spinnerbaits. We caught a few on just about everything and some good ones on a variety of baits, from big 6” swimbaits and deep diving cranks to Senkos and Rat-L-Traps. I’ve posted a few pics from our trip. Unfortunately, I don’t have pics of all of the big fish from all of the anglers yet, but I’ll post the rest of them as I get them.

The bigger fish seemed to be on main lake points and secondary points with flooded bushes and stickups on the south end of the lake. The upper end produced some big numbers of fish, but most of these fish were 6 pounds and smaller. For the lunkers though, our group had better luck on the lower end of the lake. Look for the bass to start moving shallow in the coming weeks and I expect the awesome topwater fishing should continue for quite a while.

I’ve been fishing in Mexico regularly for a number of years now and it is a thrill that I’d recommend to anyone who loves bass fishing. For pure numbers of fish on a daily basis, Mexican lakes are just phenomenal. Most lakes in Mexico go through boom and bust cycles, being red hot for numbers and/or big bass for a number of years, then going through a down period. Currently, I know of no lake in the world that is hotter than Lake Baccarac for catching 10 lb and greater lunkers. It truly is a phenomenal lake!
