Hey there guys,
As is usual, went out on the Premier. Boat has been shined up extra nice to get ready for the start (May 2nd) of their Summer season I guess. On that boat 30 anglers means plenty of rail room. Anywho.... With Danny at the helm and Jimmy on board off we went to fish the inside of Catalina.
Weather was good except that the pesky wind Intermittently picked up, making it harder to keep the right set on a spot. Moved around to try this and that area, picking up fish on every stop. Water quality still improving and we had some current conditions that worked pretty good for us most of the time (never needed a weight over 2 ounces). Water temp at the isthmus was around 58 F. Fished fairly shallow. Everyone pretty much fished with either a dropper loop, leadhead/squid, Carolina, or Texas/sliding egg rigs. Used frozen squid and the fish seemed ok with that bait. It's great being able to actually keep a lot of species now..... that we were obliged to send back to their mamas but just a few days ago. Bite was pretty consistant throughout the day. Check out the newer regs at: [#990099]http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/sportfishing_regs2005.html[/#990099]. if you haven't kept up. Caught calicos, whitefish, sheephead, opaleye, blacksmith perch, sargo, a huge sandab(authenticated), tree fish, and scorpion fish a.k.a. sculpin(released).
Good number of really nice calicos came on board. Some chatter on one big ol' girl as many would have liked to get the angler to return it to the water... but alas. Naturally it won the jackpot. Wish things were set up so that everybody would be predisposed to have a fish officially weighed, released, and be eligible for the jackpot. Knowing Danny and Jimmy a little, I'll bet the Premier would be more than willing to take the extra effort. Afterall, We all know why it would be to the advantage of the guy throwing it back (abiet no dinner from it) if they did it ..... besides increasing the spawing population ....I mena. ha ha ha
Even with movie/TV companies often using the area (Wednesday was one) for their locations, luckly there is still plenty of parking space at Pierpoint landing. Got back to the dock around 6:30pm.
Great trip, boat, crew, and fishing pals.....going again tomorrow !
