Hike Details the Oahe Dam Area Through the Years

[size 2]PIERRE, S.D. – On April 30, visitors to Oahe Downstream Recreation Area north of Fort Pierre will discover the past on a hike that explores the history of the Missouri River near the Oahe Dam.[/size]
[size 2]On the hike, participants will walk on the Cottonwood Path in the park, which is a National Recreation Trail. Discussion will be led by Ken Stewart and Chris Nelson of the State Historic Office, and Steven Littlefield, archeologist, and will cover the history of the river, from fur trade posts to irrigation to archeology and the dam’s construction.[/size]
[size 2]The hike is free, although a valid park entrance license is required, and can be purchased upon arrival. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the picnic shelter in Campground 1 and are asked to dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. [size 2]The walk is the second in a series of guided history hikes held in the Pierre area this spring. Upcoming hikes will be held on May 12 at LaFramboise Nature Area and May 21 at Farm Island. The hikes are sponsored by the S.D. Department of Game, Fish and Parks and the State Historic Office.[/size]
