Fall is a great time to get out and explore these sites, and if you’re a history buff, three free brochures will guide you to hundreds of historic sites that now lie in state parks across South Dakota.[/size] [ul] [li][size 2]Explore South Dakota’s Historic Parks[/size][size 2] – This brochure directs visitors to historic sites spanning several hundred years in the past. Whether your interest is early American Indian sites, nineteenth-century explorer expeditions, railroad history, or if you want to see settler cabins or old country schools that still stand, this brochure will show you the way to go. [/size] [li][size 2]Explore SD State Parks with Lewis and Clark [/size][size 2]– Follow in Lewis and Clark’s footsteps as the brochure highlights the journey of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Many adventures took place in or near what are now South Dakota state park areas. Along the way, visitors can keep a journal of their physical activities in at least eight parks and receive a free pedometer from the S.D. Department of Health that measures miles walked or ran. The publication is produced in partnership with the SD Department of Health to promote healthy living through physical activity. [/size] [li][size 2]Dakota Forts[/size][size 2] – The Dakotas played an important role in westward expansion, and many military forts were established in the late 1800s to protect the pioneers settling in the area. Produced in partnership with the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department and the State Historical Society of North Dakota, this brochure provides the background information on six military fort sites in North and South Dakota.[/size] [/li][/ul]
