PIERRE, S.D. – Waterfowl seasons open Saturday, Sept. 25 across most of South Dakota, and Canada goose hunters should note that the goose season map shown on page 22 of the 2004 South Dakota Hunting Handbook is erroneous.
State Waterfowl Biologist Spencer Vaa noticed that the Canada goose season map in the 2004 South Dakota Hunting Handbook doesn’t account for this year’s changes that were made for the regular Canada goose season in units 1 and 2.
"Bon Homme County is now part of Canada goose unit 2, not unit 1, so the season on Canada geese there opens on Oct. 23," Vaa said. "Additionally, Potter County east of U.S. Highway 83 and Hyde County north of U.S. Highway 14 are now part of Unit 1, which means goose hunting in those areas will open Sept. 25." The text description in the hunting handbook is correct, and the map in the online hunting handbook will be updated
