Utah boy going to southern California mid October
#1
Okay California board, I am heading down to the Long Beach area for a little vacation. I have never been fishing in the ocean and I really want to try it out. I will also be traveling with a couple kiddos so nothing to rough for the first time out. What charters/piers/beaches/whatever would be productive and a nice family outing and not overwhelmingly expensive? Anyone willing to help a fellow bfter out? Looking to be there mid to late October and a arrive early Saturday leave late Sunday type deal. Also any suggestions on beaches and hotels to stay in?

Thanks in advance.

Hello OneEyedJack,
Well you are in for a treat. There are a ton of boats that can take you out on a vriety of trips. For 1/2 and 3/4 day trips you can get by fairly inexpensive. The first that comes to mind is Long Beach Sportfishing (http://www.longbeachsportfishing.com/) they have some great promotional trips with prizes and things around that time that would be worth checking into some more.

Because I lived close I never really stayed in the hotels so I can't be much help there but I am sure you will get some great tips from the other users of this board.

Lastly be sure to check back here as the departure time for your trip nears because some of the guys who have recently been out fishing can tell you what is hot.

Good luck and enjoy your trip to Southern California!

Hey there One_eyed_jack,

We will be more than happy to provide you with the latest. Besides our regular posters, TubeN2 and I will be most happy to provide you with info. I fish almost exclusively the Long Beach/San Pedro (south of Rocky Point, Palo Verdes) area while I know that TubeN2 has done a whole lot of fishing on the Santa Monica Bay (north of Rocky Point, Palo Verdes) to the Channel Islands area..... saltwater wise.

Of course, we actually fish all over the place so somebody will have the latest where ever you may go to fish.

Things are changing dramatically at the moment so until things settle down a bit, I, myself, don't feel comfortable giving anything but general info now and...... later providing the right-on information when it's closer to your arrival date.

There are plenty of Hotels around. Just get something that is not too close to the beach or be prepared to pay a little more than expected.

As far as the fishing goes, there is still plenty of action. Just as JapanRon said he is an expert on Long Beach. I was going to Long Beach once in awhile. I have also spent some good times in San Pedro, Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica and Oxnard boats that go to the Channel Islands.

There are plenty of Piers to fish as well. My son and I have hit every pier from Newport Beach all the way up to Santa Barbara. There are also a few jetties along the way to hit as well.

The Jettys are kind of like fishing by the dam at Deer Creek. Nice big rocks but easy to get to the water.

Fantastic guys. Thank you for the info. I assumed asking for specifics on what is hot would be a shot in the dark at best. Bottom line my family likes to fish and this will be the kids first trip on a plane and the first trip to the ocean so I want to make this very memorable and as conflict free as possible. For you long beach area aficianados, what areas should I stray away from in the way of lodging? We will be flying into Long Beach Airport and will be renting a car. I dont mind paying more for a better area to stay in. Anyhow I will keep you posted as to what we do and when we solidify the plans.

Thanks again guys for your input.

Hey there One_eyed_jack,

I live about 1 mile from the LB airport. Got my private and commercial license there! There are lots of the bigger hotels on the south and south west side of the airport like the Marriot, etc. There are also lot ....and I mean lots of medium size motels all the along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) that pretty much follows the beaches. Some are seedy but many are for guys just like you .... family I mean. Some are 5 minutes to the fishing!

I'll notice on my almost daily fishing excursion some of the names of what I think are the better ones close to the fishing!
