EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: The river is at 15,000 c.f.s. Excellent trout fishing in the Redding/Anderson area. Lots of great hook-ups for big wild rainbows up to five pounds -- especially first light of the day. Globugs still working best. Also, trout/shad combos. There are still shad in the Red Bluff area, so anglers can enjoy the best of both beginning the first light of day catching and releasing trout, then moving on to shad below the Red Bluff Diversion Dam. Expect shad to be around for another couple of weeks. Fishing from Red Bluff Diversion Dam downstream is slow. Number of salmon counted by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (1,778) is below that of last year at this time (1,926).
Guide services and information: Hank Mautz Professional Guide Service, (800) 355-3113. Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Kirk Portocarrero, (800) 670-4448 or (530) 221-6151. Web site: www.sacriverguide.com.
LAKE DAVIS: The hot weather and resulting algae bloom have resulted in slow fishing. The daytime surface water temperatures are running 73 to 74 degrees. Trollers are going deep with leadcore or downriggers. Shore fishermen are having to fish early and late and fishing the deep water drop offs such as Honker point. Fly fishing is limited to the points on the west shore. Fish water that’s 8- to 14-feet deep. Sinking lines or strike indicators have been bringing intermittent action. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com.
FEATHER RIVER: Flows at 6,500 c.f.s. is the water release on the Feather. Fishing for Kings is fair to good, up and down. Chrome king salmon are bright fish, 12-25 pounds, with an occasional 30-pounder. Back-trolling flatfish lures, green & gold, T-50's, starting to catch a few on roe.
LAKE SABRINA: Another week of good fishing, although some anglers had to work for their limits. Pretty much what was working is still working. Trolling wooly buggers, worms or red and gold lures is working for those that enjoy dragging a line through the water. Working the inlets with Powerbait, eggs or worms produced many a limit.
The lake is stocked on a regular basis by the Department of Fish and Game. Once again, the DFG stocked on Friday, with pan-size rainbows along with 25 trophy-size trout. The draining of the lake has begun with the level of the water dropping about 10 inches a day. Edison plans on beginning work on repairing the dam around October 1st. This means the lake must be empty prior to the first. Two natural lakes (behind the island & past Cook’s Point) will appear with the back lake still being 200’ feet deep when the front part of the lake is empty. We expect the fish to migrate toward the back, so fishing should remain steady.
The skeeters are starting to drop off. The weather has been beautiful. The temperatures have remained constant with the highs in the high 70s and the lows in the low 50s with a bit of a breeze on the lake in the afternoons so don’t forget a jacket. Lake Sabrina Boat Landing, (760) 873-7425.
SOUTH LAKE: Trolling is starting to pick up by the Rockslide. Lead core line with a 15-foot leader and a red-dot frog Needlefish has been bringing in tons of fish. Several anglers using Baby Cowbells and trailing a threaded nightcrawler are catching nice limits. The lake will be stocking trophy trout in the 8- to 15-pound range this week. Shore fishing is good with Trout Traps, Stingers or Powerbait. We transported a group of float tubers to behind the island today. They should do well with Thomas Buoyants or olive Matukas; bead headed olive Wooly Worms on a slow retrieve are spectacular back there. DFG is stocking weekly with nice planters and keeping the fishing great for the summer. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
BISHOP CREEK: The creek water level remains perfect for angling and DFG has stocked this week keeping the limits coming. We have had quite a few Alpers showing up with nightcrawlers being the best bait. Salmon Eggs seem to have slowed a little. Yellow Panther Martins with a silver blade or a small silver Kastmaster have been great. Weir Pond has been great with olive Matukas or red headed Wooly Worms doing best. Some good results with Stingers. Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
NORTH LAKE AND INTAKE II: North Lake is doing very well. Slowed down a little this week with anglers reporting having to work for limits but still getting them. White trout traps with a mealworm are working well and Lemon Twist Powerbait attracting planter. Green bodied Mosquitoes on the surface are a lot of fun. Intake 2 picked up the pace this week with lots of fish coming out with nightcrawlers or rainbow Powerbait. Green or white & yellow Stingers on a bobber did it well for a group of kids staying at the Lodge this weekend. They got to take home a lot of “trophies.” Bishop Creek Resorts 760-873-4484.
BIG FISH: Blake Aaron of Upland nailed a fantastic 4 pound, 12 ounce Alpers Trophy Rainbow from Parchers hole on Bishop Creek using a Bird’s Nest. Brady Hecht, from Temecula, brought in a 3-pound, 11-ounce Rainbow from Bishop Creek using nightcrawlers. Dylan Bradford, a five-year-old from Barstow, caught a beautiful 1-pound, 11-ounce Rainbow from South Lake.
