Lake Mead National Recreation Area Implements Fire Restrictions

An extreme fire danger exists throughout Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA). Winter/Spring rains promoted the abundant growth of grass and brush in the park. This vegetation has now dried with the heat of the season, producing heavy fuel for wildland fires. These dry conditions, mixed with abundant fuel, increase the likelihood of fires caused by lightning and visitors. The following fire restrictions are in effect until further notice:
Campfires
-- Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited except in designated campgrounds where a host is present
and/or fees are charged, and picnic areas with built-in grills for visitor use --Liquid propane gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel portable grills/stoves are allowed
-- Campfires/rings at the shoreline are also prohibited due to the extreme high fire danger that exists
Smoking
Cigarettes pose a serious fire problem for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Fires may be started quickly from an improperly discarded cigarette. It is important for all visitors to extinguish cigarettes completely and use ashtrays.
--Smoking is prohibited in all backcountry areas
--Smoking is permitted within and directly adjacent to buildings that have designated smoking areas; use the ashtray provided in that area
--Smoking is permitted on paved or gravel roads, and sidewalks; use ashtrays
--Smoking is permitted within private vehicles; use the vehicle’s ashtray
No Fireworks
Fireworks including those labeled "safe and sane", are prohibited at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and all public lands.
Firearms
Loaded weapons are prohibited in the park unless you are hunting in a designated area, during a legal hunt period, and in accordance with state law. Firing tracer rounds is prohibited.
Violations of the above prohibitions may result in fines of up to $5,000 and/or a six-month incarceration. Violators may also be held responsible for resource damage, injuries to people, and the costs of fire suppression efforts. Federal, state, or local representatives of an organized firefighting force, in performance of official duties, and/or persons with permits issued by the National Park Service, are exempt from the restrictions in this order.
The public is encouraged to enjoy their experience at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and to do so safely and responsibly.
