90% + of that can be done in the garage. Remove the lower and place the upper minus BCG/charging handle in a vise (use cardboard/something to protect the finish). Look through the barrel and aim at your neighbors door knob. Then adjust the sights if needed. My neighbors door knob is 48 yards away from my vise [cool] That will put you close. Then hit the range to fine tune.
Factory 55gr ball ammo isn't the most accurate. It gets the job done for what it is meant for. 2-3" groups at 100 yards is fairly common. I get that down to 1" and under loading my own 55gr FMJ plinking ammo.
The final decision is what to set zero at. IMO for a home defense mindset a 100yd zero is the way to go (.8" low at 50yds). Lots of info on the net is available to help you decide. Many will say a 50yd zero (1.6" high at 100yds).
