SARL Fishing Report 1/21/04 - tubeN2 - 01-23-2004 SARL cranks out two trophy rainbows in 17-pound class The parade of trophy rainbow trout continues to pour out of Santa Ana River Lakes with another 20 rainbows over the 10-pound mark reported at the lake's tackle shop, according to Louie Cervantes. The biggest fish were a pair of rainbows over 17 pounds. The biggest of these was a 17.6-pounder landed by Ruben Villa, Santa Ana, at Levitz' Corner, while a 17 1/4-pound trout was caught by Damian Ambario, Anaheim. Jose Lemus, La Puente, caught four trout that weighed in at 30 pounds with his best at 16-0 and 9-0. Craig Adkinson, Orange, also had four trout that went 26.9 pounds, and his best was also a 16-pounder. Adkinson also had trout at 9-0 and 8-0 on another trip to Santa Ana during the past week. The best action has continued to come on a floating bait like Crave Nitro Dough, small jigs, or nightcrawlers. Crave Gravy or Crave Nitro Grease is being added to whatever most anglers are fishing at SARL. The scent additive adds to the lure or bait's appeal. For the second week in a row, Santa Ana River Lakes will get plants of Lightning and Thunder trout, including more large fish. There are still two trout in the Lakes that may be bigger than the 27 1/2-pound lake and state record caught the day before Christmas. Some anglers are saying one of these trout will weigh 30 pounds when -- if -- it's finally landed. Anglers can fish Santa Ana River Lakes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes costs $18 has a five-fish limit. During trout season, 24-hour fishing will be allowed on Friday and Saturday night once a month on full moon weekends. The next Full Moon Madness will be January 30-31. While trout are in the spotlight this time of year, catfish are also planted each week at SARL, and the full moon weekends are a good time to catch a nice stringer. The best catfish this past week was a 10-pounder caught by Doug Cherry, Placentia, fishing shrimp in the Catfish Lake. The one pond on the left hand side of the road as you enter is the one holding the majority of catfish I believe. It was that way for years past. You almost never hear about the catfish unless there is a big catfish promotion. They might be taking a cat nap. As that lake has not been dredged for a few years there may be lot of kittys just hanging out. I'm almost tempted. Anyone who's gone catfishing there in the last month or so out there? I heard the trout action slowed down. [signature] Re: [releaseit] SARL Fishing Report 1/21/04 - tubeN2 - 01-23-2004 It looks like they are getting smaller now. Take a look at it. 10 to 17lbs. I guess they are holding back on the public now. A water supply provides running water originating from there and the current will carry your bait out quite a ways if its the same as it was in the past. There is also a submerged road right across the pond too. Then the main lake to your right, and over by Levitz is another lake. Which one is everyone catching trout in? And have they been doing better off boats or shore? [signature] Re: [releaseit] SARL Fishing Report 1/21/04 - releaseit - 01-26-2004 I went Sun instead of Sat. Caught 12 trout.
