Happy Father's Day #2 - jellyworm - 06-15-2014 I'm sure most of us credit our father's with teaching us how to fish or at least getting around it enough to know that we liked it. I recall watching my Dad wading in a river in Tennessee turning over rocks in the rapids and picking out the hellgrammites for bait. He showed my brother and me how to catch crawfish for bait too, and then we would begin wading the river. My Dad used an unconventional way of using a fly rod to flip the bait around a rock or tree stump, but the results spoke for themselves as he knew how to catch the largemouth and small mouth bass in that river. My brother and I learned too! They put a dam on that river and it is now known as Percy Priest Reservoir and is still known for good bass fishing. My memories on this Father's Day take me back to the skills I learned on the river with my Dad. Yesterday I took my grandson and his friend to the free fishing day at Boulder City Pond --- not exactly the quiet river that my brother and I had --- but you've got to deal with what you have to work with. Yes it was crowded and not a lot of fish were caught, but everyone seemed to be having fun. I saw father's and son's (and mother's and daughter's too) who were learning the skills of fishing together and having fun doing it. And so for me, Father's Day is about the good memories in my life, and hoping that I am making a few good memories for my children and grandchildren as well!
