Old boat questions - albinotrout - 05-20-2013

With the passing of my father in law a week ago I have found out that my wife and I may end up with his boat. Now I don't know much about it except that the motor isn't very good. It is an older fiber glass boat. When I go to look at it, what should I be looking for? What info will I need and where would I find it? What areas if any should i focus on when inspectIng it for the first time? I am a novice when it comes to these things. I hopefully will have some pics of it tomorrow. Some info from what I remember of it is when he bought it in the late 90's it was old to begin with and wouldn't get up to plane.

BOAT= Break Out Another Thousand is all you need to remember, LOL. Get the make, model of boat, engine size and year, make. The pics should tell the story if the boat is worth keeping. If it is the late 90's it should be good, if it was covered or stored inside. If it has been outdoors and uncovered, well who knows. If you are lucky, it might just need a carb overhaul.
Sorry about your farther in law passing.

It's not a late 90's model more like 70's. I will get the make and model and post it up as well with the pics. Personally I think the motor might need replacing but I will see the actual condition tomorrow. It is stored in Huntsville right now so I don't know if it was in the garage or the barn.

You may be the proud new owner of a two stroke!Lucky! They run forever, worst case its low on compression,if so change out the power head, still cheaper than the 4 stroke and It'll outlast the life span of 20 4 strokes put together!
Remember, 2 stroke outboards=Best outboards

Its an old Renken. Not sure model or year, stepmother in law still going through trying to find paperwork. Approx 16 ft. Rated for 80 hp has 65 hp merc 650 on it. Has a small casting deck on the bow and wide open interior. Its been stored in a barn for the last 7 or 8 years.[inline Insideboat1.JPG]

I'm afraid to say this but it looks like, BOAT= Break Out Another Thousand[frown]. Even if you can get the motor running the boat looks like a money pit to me. Geezer works on older motors like that, send him a PM and get his opinion.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. I might tell the stepmother inlaw just sell as is. Not worth much anyway. I think my father in law paid $500 for it.

Hard to tell anything from a few pictures. You need to have it looked at by a good mechanic and get their opinion. Is the floor solid or rotten? Are there any noticeable cracks in the fiberglass?
