SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES & CORONA LAKE - tubeN2 - 11-20-2003 Season's first plants of huge super trout now in Santa Ana River Lakes The big boys are coming. That's the word at Santa Ana River Lakes where the trout action has been very good this past week, and it will just get better with the first plant of the famous Mt. Lassen Trout Farms "Super Trout" this week. These monster fish run from 10 to 20 pounds, and there is always the possibility that one of these big fish will top the current lake and state record of 26.08 pounds caught at SARL in 2002. There are reportedly rainbows in Mt. Lassen's trophy trout ponds that are pushing 30 pounds, and those are the ponds that supplied this week's trophy trout plant. This past week, the best fish were a passel of "teenagers," as the lake's staff calls them. Those are trout from five to seven pounds or a little better that fight hard, jump, and put on a spectacular show. The biggest was a 7.7-pounder landed by Horton Johnson, Palos Verdes, while fishing strawberry Crave at the Bubble Hole. But a 7 1/2-pounder was landed by Oliver Solis, Los Angeles, while casting a Thomas Buoyant lubed up with Crave Nitro Grease, and a 7 1/4-pound rainbow was caught by Ruben Gabriel, Norwalk, fishing a small jig. The Bubble Hole has been the hot spot this past week, and Crave Nitro Dough fishing on a light leader has been the top bait. Small jigs or lures coated with Nitro Grease have also been very good. The catfish bite has also continued to be pretty good in the Big Lake and Catfish Lake. Doi Luong, Chino, landed a 13-pound channel fishing shrimp doused with Crave Gravy in the Big Lake. Anglers can fish Santa Ana River Lakes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each of these passes costs $18 has a five-fish limit. During trout season, 24-hour fishing will be allowed Friday and Saturday night once a month. Trout and catfish are planted each week. "Absolutely everyone is catching trout here," said David Horn, store manager at the lake. "Full limits are the rule, and there are lots of five and six pounders coming in every day." The biggest fish was a 7-0 landed by Carl Gula, Hesperia, while fishing with chartreuse floating bait in the middle of the lake. But the big fish, the super trophy trout from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms, are being planted this week. These are 10- to 20-pound class trout, with the potential of fish even bigger. The problem might be getting the bait through all of the mere 1-0 to 3-0 class fish to one of the big boys. Either way, the stringers will be impressive. This past week, three anglers from Long Beach, Sandra and Mike Dyer along with Chad Brockins, caught 15 trout that weighed a total of 32 pounds, and the stringer included fish at 4-0, 5-0, and 6-0. This weekend, a similar stringer will probably have three trout in the 'teens. The top bait has been Crave Nitro Dough fished on a four-foot leader, but a crappie jig or a nightcrawler smothered with either Crave Gravy or Crave Nitro Grease has been also been a hot ticket. Corona Lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each $18 pass has a five-fish limit. There will be 24-hour fishing allowed Friday and Saturday nights once a month. Trout and catfish are planted at Corona Lake each week.
