Take the kids to Hyrum - whit210 - 05-03-2012

Took my 11 old nephew to Hyrum yesterday after school. Trolled for about 3 hours and boated 20+ planter rainbows. This is a great time to get the kids on the water for some fast and furious action. Get'em out there and they will catch the bug!

I was out there last night searching for bass and it looked like wiper boils going on in the inlet. We couldn't resist so we started pitching cranks at them, they sure do get acrobatic. Earlier in the day I had a really nice bow slam my spinnerbait, jump about 3 feet in the air and get off. I agree the kids would have a blast.

Thanks for the report. Hot bite! Alright! Some of them bitty bows do have a lot more attitude then they have bulk, but some light tackle makes 'em seem like they got some shoulders!

Run into anything beyond bows? Still wondering where all the perch got to!

Only targeted the trout last night. The water temp was as high as 58, so they should be moving shallow 'reel' soon.

[left]For those of us who fish from the shore, is there a spot suitable for smaller children, other than paying the park fee and fishing from there? Is there access on the east side of the reservoir?

My brother speaks highly of the fishing at the dam. I am almost positive there isn't a fee for that access.

You can fish from shore by the outlet on the northwest corner or on the southwest corner of the dam. There are parking areas and there is NO fee.

What about climbing down the N/E end by Big Toe? Know folks that do that for ice-fishing, just not sure how good the shore access is, especially since that big slide last year.

But I'd agree - probably most common is the west side. Seen folks climb down just east of Devil's half too...

Just noticed in the paper, they are having a Cinco de Mayo celebration at Hyrum Saturday 11-3 I think - at the Beach area. No fee to enter, says they are offering canoe, kayak, even motor boat rides. Not sure if they'll let you troll along the way, BUT - you can walk the shore away from the "swim" area and should be able to get some decent access.
I'd bet if you called the state park there, you could get all the details.

I'll just add another vote for west end spillway it gets deep fast and the fish seem to hang there. It is a little rough to get through the rocks and brush for small kids but should be okay if you're careful. Good luck. J
