Tradition 8-29-10 - Ricky-Ray - 08-31-2010 Jumped on the Traditon out of Redondo Sportfishing on Sunday 8/29/10 after almost four months of no fishing due to work and other things going on. Arrived at Redondo just a little after 5am and got in line next to the docks. Right around 5:45am Morgan comes up and tells us to come on board. Today's crew we had Captain John at the help (Steve was taking the day off), Deckhand Morgan, Pinhead John, and Tami in the Galley. With a light load of about 20 people we took off and picked up some extra finbait just in case, once loaded we went north towards the tankers. Today's game plan would be to stay local and see if we can get into the sandbass and maybe some barracuda that's been around, and then end the day with some rockfish and maybe some sculpin. After a short trip we arrived at our destination and Captain John started looking on the meter. First stop produced nothing and we were off looking for another one. Second spot produce a couple of sandies and a barracuda or two. With the numbers still not looking good coming over the rail Captain John decides to leave and search for something better. Points the boat south and we head out towards deeper water towards the rockfish grounds. 4-6oz torpedo's were called for but on the first stop with the current ripping you needed at least 8 oz's just to have your line stay right on top of you. A few guys were using 4oz's or less and after a quick advisement they changed over to heavier sinkers. First drift and we start seeing some really nice salmon grouper's come over the rail. Spot did pretty good so we reset over the spot 3 more times before the bite shut off and we went looking for somewhere else. And so it went it throughout the rest of the day. Stopped at a spot and if the fish bit we would reset on it at least once or twice more before heading on to somewhere else. Some really nice sized salmon groupers, along with some chuckleheads and even some starries came over the rail that I saw. There might have been a few red's too but I couldn't tell as I did not get a good look at them coming over the rail. Our day finally came to an end around 3:30 and Captain John pointed the boat back towards Redondo, Tami was in the galley doing last request for burgers and what not, and Morgan on deck doing the fish cleaning while pinhead John was scrubbing down the boat. Jackpot went to the only legal barracuda caught today. Beautiful weather on Sunday and the ocean was flat as it could be. Despite tough fishing conditions the crew of the Tradtion worked hard to get us on the fish and helped everyone out with tangles, fish bagging and anything else in between. [signature] |
