Arrrgh Leaky waders - Majja - 04-10-2010

I bought my waders about 4 years ago and only use them in my tube. Well last time out I noticed my right leg was getting wet. I thought i found the pin hole and fixed it but alas it did not. (fixed at the end of last year). I decided to give them the bath tub test as I could not find any pin holed using a light in a dark room. So I filled up the tub and hopped in last night. And after only a few minutes the back of my entire leg was wet. Not a good thing if I was planning on going fishing tomorrow. I am going to take them back to Cabelas and let them look at them as they are the Cabela's Dry Plus Waders.

I had the same problem. I have been pretty rough on mine. It took me forever to find where they were leaking. Finally realized it was on the seams. So I put some goop on all the seams and they have been pretty good. Especially where the stocking hooks to the rest of the wader.

I only get 3 years of good use out of any pair of waders. It seems that on year 3 the leaks show up and if I press my luck into year 4 chasing leaks becomes a lost cause.

to find leaks: fill from inside with a hose.
mark holes with ink marker.

cheap and lasting fix: black windsheld sealer from auto parts store.
clean area, half in out from hole or seam add sealer,
cover with cloth cut to size (tshirt, dish towel, any thin cloth) stick finger in mouth to wet and pat cloth, cover with more sealer and pat with wet finger.

allow to dry a few hours, dust with power or dirt.

once fixed a 4 inch rip in my raft with 2 plys, never did leak

Could be the Neoprene foot, those are hard to fix. I see it allot at the connection between cloth and neoprene.

I have noticed that by washing mine about every 6 months or more if I am in some yukee waters or sweat allot, that I am on 5th year and no leaks. Orvis Pros.
My Rivendell the same thing and 3rd year this year.

What about doing the reverse to test fill the waders full of water and hang them and watch the outside to find the leak? Don't know if this is proper wader care but seems like it would work.

Well Cabelas came through they swapped them out and gave me a credit that I thought was more than fair. I just thought it was wierd that they were seeping in through the back of the leg. There were no seams in some of the spots where water was getting in. I used the credit to get some 4mm neo's for now and will get some new breathables later this year.

New waders are AWESOME! But, I wonder how long they will do that. Four years is pretty good with breathables. Simms or Orvis wouldn't have given a new pair.

4 years is a long time for waders. Unless you store them in an air-tight bag during the off season, basic ozone in the atmosphere will weaken them and cause pin holes. If I got 4 years out of mine, I would be celebrating, not complaining.
