Rod, Reel and Tackel for SD Walleye and Pike - IllinoisBoy - 02-16-2010

Hey y'all. I am moving up to South Dakota for the summer to work at Sand Lake Refuge, and I am going to have lots of free time to fish for SD walleye and feisty pike, so I wanted to know what kind of rod, reel, tackle and line I should use, for a relatively low price (I am a college student, ya know). Also, what other kinds of fish do you guys get up there in the lakes and wetlands?

I'd recommend about a 7' light rod that's fairly stiff. Any reasonable ball bearing reel will be OK. I've come to just love 10 lb. test 2 lb. dia. Spiderwire or Fireline braided line. The stuff casts great and is sensitive as all get out. If you're going after pike, it's a good idea to use a 6 - 8" steel leader so you don't get bitten off. Far as lures go, I'd check the local fishing outlets. Damn few I ever ran into when I lived there gave me a bum steer & tried to sell me stuff I didn't need.

Good luck.
