2/24 Ririe report - Belasko - 02-24-2009

I don't know what I did, but I'm sorry!!! I have fished Ririe about 8 times this season and caught 1 rainbow and 1 sucker. That's it! I went up today at O' dark hundred figuring that Windriver has had good luck early morning. I was first in the parking lot and onto the ice. The initial greeting should have warned me. There was about 1/2 an inch of water and slush on the ice. I couldn't tell where the usual holes were so I just wandered out to where the usual village sets up. After about 45 minutes and nothing other than some others coming out on the ice I went looking for more holes closer to the opposite shoreline. About 2/3 of the way across the water increased to close to 2 inches. I quickly readjusted course and set up about even with the rock outcropping and straight out from the end of the dock. I had rods covering from 10-30 feet deep and never got a nibble. However the wind when it picked up from 15 or so to closer to 25 it made the rod tips occasionally twitch like a light bite. I dropped one line down and set it just off the bottom for a while at one point but nothing even tried to steal my mealy. At 930 I decided that I'd had enough, despite enjoying the show as the owners of that camper on the ice tried to get it up the ramp but it apparently broke through at the edge. The 4 wheelers just weren't up to it. From what I heard and saw, no one had gotten hits up to that point. One report said a guy further up the reservoir had seen some fish on his finder but they seemed to have lockjaw. I'm definately getting ready for warmer water fishing.

Wow! You have had a stroke of bad luck at Ririe. It had slowed down really bad even on Sat. for me. I do not know if I will make it out again or not, but everyone should be careful it sounds like an early break up might happen.

I'm afraid Ririe is done for Ice fishing. I showed up at 3 pm and the ice was no longer safe. I had a newly purchased fish finder and didn't even dare venture out on the ice to try out my 2 hour old unit. chunks of ice 10 feet from the shore were rolling with the waves. The ice was fractured into pieces and I felt going out on it was foolhardy so I thought better of it. I caught 5 kokanee yesterday and after a 2 pm business meeting I thought an evening on the ice sounded like a good idea. not so much. I think I'll head to Clark canyon tomarrow for a last hurah. As I left the parking area and road leading to the highway, I was faced with crossing a small stream that was washing across the road, flowing towards Ririe from the melting fields above. I think it's over boys.

Fun while it lasted. I had a great time this year on Ririe. Went 6 times and limited out four times. The two times I couldn't find the Kokanee I was taking some of my young nieces and nephew to give them a try at some fast and furious kokanee fishing. The moral of the story is don't take kids fishing, they are bad luck.[Wink]
