2008 Cow Elk Hunt - HookJaw_Brimhall - 10-12-2008
Headed up yesterday to one of my favorite CWMUs with my cow tag I had drawn earlier this this year. The CWMU is in Northen Utah near the Causey area and holds a lot of Elk, Deer, Moose, and bagillions of Grouse.
Me, Flycastin, and another friend got to our spot around 7:30-8:00. As soon as we got out of the truck the whole mountain was bugling. There were bulls everywhere! We had a nice 5 point run right by the truck at about 80 yards. We made our way down the mountain toward the bulk of the singing bulls. Once we got about halfway down the mountain and after we had jumped over 50 grouse, we got to a spot where we could see elk across the canyon. We could hear bulls bugling in the bottom of the canyon and decided to head down in the bottom (We didn't know what were in for). Once at the bottom and jumping 50 more grouse, we picked out some distant cows. We closed the distance and Flycastin spotted a cow at 200 yards. I pulled up my trusty .270 and put a bullet in the shoulder. Unfortunately, the bullet hit higher than I would have liked and we ended up tracking her for another 200 yards. Once she was found, I put one through the sweet spot and she tumbled to the bottom of the deepest canyon on the property. We cut her up and started the "trek from hell" back to the truck. It was only 1 mile back to the truck, but it was all up a steep mountain. Took us three or four hours but we made it.
Turned out to be a great hunt with great company. No guides and we had the whole place to ourselves, couldn't ask for a better hunt.

Nice going, should be some good eating. Monday I am going back to Soldier Summit to try for my spike again. I was up there for the opener till thurs. Seen many bull elk but only a few spikes, and of course way out of range. I am hoping this snow will help me out.

I had a great time. Hearing all of the elk in that canyon bugling their heads off really gets your heart pounding.
The hike out was a pain, but all of the grouse and deer hunting we've been doing really paid off. The shoulders hurt way more than the legs... haha. I could/would do it again today given the opportunity. [cool]

she looks young and tender. i always go for the big body small head when cow hunting. yum yum. she is a mounter look how long her eye lashes were. got to be 500 class. lol nothing like screaming bulls on a walk in.
