Pintail flats - bottomwatcher - 04-21-2008

With pintail flats burning this last week ( 20 sq. miles) It should be a banner year out there with all the new growth coming in. When OB used to burn the cattails it would bring in the birds to feed on the new shoots. Do you think the marsh burning will accomplish the same results even though there is not much cattails left?

I do it is my understanding that the burning of the pfragmity (sp ?) is the only to kill it off and allow the cattails to start growing again. I know Farmington Bay is going to burn off a bunch as well.

It depends on what was burned. If it was bulrush it maybe replaced with phragmites and that would make it worse instead of better. The planned burns on ogden bay and farmington were to remove the phragmites that was sprayed last fall. Hopefully killing the phragmites with chemicals and burning it will slow down it's return. I think the latest total I heard was 1800 acres. That is more like 3 square miles. This fire may have burned alot of the upland area . That wouldn't be good. It would destroy all the nesting habitat for pheasants on the nortern side of the refuge. That is one of a few areas where there are still a few pheasants in weber county. gshorthair

They were burning the Phrag and had a flair up after everyone went home and by the time they were called back out it was out of control. It burned everything all the way to the lake.
