A kinda dumb question - icefool - 04-28-2003

Is there a difference between a mud cat and a bull head cat. Went to the DWR website and they don't even list mud cats.

No they are the same fish, there are a lot of different names for them. Another name is yellow belly. WH2

As far as I am aware, they are the same fish. I heard everyone talking about "mud cats" at Utah lake. When I looked up the species in the lake, it lists bull heads, but not muds. The more I asked about it, the answer I got was that they are the same fish.

No dumb questions on this board icefool, just plain questions. The mud cat and bull head refer to the black bullhead catfish, common throughout Utah. That and channel catfish are the only two catfish species found in the state. Both are introduced exotics, but great sportfish. There is also a yellow bullhead back east, but they do not occur in Utah. Black bullheads make great eating. Some people refer to the mottled sculpin as bullhead, but it is a misnomer. They are the ugly little suckers found in the local trout streams and are often used as bait.
