Dave,

What causes the rod tip to release? Also is it adjustable for light bitting fish?

Thanks,

Re: [SteelFisher] slammer pics - davetclown - 12-05-2008

what causes the release is the fish.

it tugs on the line bending the rod below the catch point and the arm that holds it up slams back against the main body. hence the slamer name.

now as for those fish that mouth the hook and not run, its just a matter of using a lighter rod. but even with gills that are typicaly known for sucking in the bait and not running there is realy nothing that can be done for them because this setup like all other setups requires the fish to make an attempt to swim off.

thre is a comercial unit on the market using another name and is a bulky peice of plastic that runs in excess of 50 green backs. It swears up and down it works on gills and crappies.

I emagine it will work well on them, I just know that when fishing for pan fish I would rather use a rod in the hand because I get enough swallowed hooks with out giving them a long standing rig like this slamer or other similar style rod type tipups.

for gills I tend to use one and two pound test line and would be afraid of using this type of setup in fear snapping the line every time the rod set the hook. but I would emagine if you were using a real fast action rod "aka noodle rod" it would work just fine.

the amount of tention set on the arm is in direct relationship to the rod you are using. So making your base ajustable for different rod lenths will be a great asset to you later in the season when you want to target different species.

If you click on any of those pictures

a larger pic will show up,

if you click on it again it will blow up to about 4 time the size.

I think the quality of the photo may be good enough for you to down load the pic to your computer and blow it up any further.

if not drop me a note here and I will be happy to take aditional photos of parts from different angles to give you a greater concept of what is in my work.

now that this topic was brought back up, I was wondering how your setup went. and if you have any photos.

and no, I dont expect them to be stained and varnished like I did on mine... lol, that was a bit of an over kill.... "I had got board waitin for ice and needed something to do"
