Help on huntington beach pier - Fish_Slayer - 01-10-2008 Hello, I am from Utah and am in huntington beach staying with my sister and her family till wed. Ive been here for a couple days now and have not had to much luck fishing. we have caught a couple small surf perch and a small leopard shark. along with 2 small small fish that i could not tell what they were. last time i was here i caught alot of macrole. I would like to start catching some more fish but dont really know what to try. I have been using small little jigs and little fly type things. We caught the shark on some squid. Is their a time of day that i should try for better results? Ive been going between 12 and 4 with my nephew. Me and bobfrapples (my brother inlaw) are going to try going later at night some time while i am here. Anyways if any of you have any advice you could share that would be great. Next to the restaurant entrance is a little bait shop. Mussel cups work good for the Butter lip perch and the Opaleyes. If you fish off of the North West area of the Pier, there is a small reef there. You will find other species around that reef. I have caught California Scorpionfish, Sheepshead and small rock fish there. If you cast past the reef, you can find some of the other Shark species. Bigger Leopard Sharks, Horn Sharks, Spiny Dogfish and Swell Sharks. You may want to take a crab net with you for fun. Place 1/2 of a frozen Mackerel in it and leave it for about 20 minutes. There are Red Crabs, Rock Crabs, Dungeones Crabs, Spider Crabs, Fidler Crabs, Kelp Crabs and Ghost Crabs. Are you fishing it more in the day or towards night time?? Many of these species are evenening critters. Your daytime species will limit you to Barred Surfperch, Pompano, Butterlip Perch and Mackerel..........Save the Mackerel for the Crab trap.[cool] Be sure to try the Ruby's Restaurant. They have some mean burgers and some killer hot chocolate for the late night fishing.[] [signature] Re: [tubeN2] Help on huntington beach pier - Fish_Slayer - 01-11-2008 Me and my brother in law went out tonight from about 7:30 till 11:30. Just got home. I caught 2 thorn rays and small fish that i have no idea what it is since im use to utah fish. I can do both pretty much. this is the first trip i have made though. We caught them on mac meat tonight. Tomorrow i am going to try fishing by the life guard tower. An old man was telling us where and how to fish the pier. We do not have a crab net (yet) they just moved here a couple months ago. Maybe by the time i get back her in the summer they will have one. Ill post up how i do tomorrow. Thanks for the help! By the way tuben2. You are tubedudes son right? He sure seems to know his stuff about fishing. He is always nailing them! Sounds like it runs in the family[] [signature] Re: [Fish_Slayer] Help on huntington beach pier - tubeN2 - 01-12-2008 See if you can get some pictues of the un-identifyable fish so that I may help you add them to your total species list. Yes. I am TubeDudes son. I have learned alot from him and picked up a whole lot more on my own or by sharing with otheres. If you are able to keep your bait off of the bottom, you will be able to avoid many of the Thornback Rays or Shovel Nose GuitarFish as they are properly termed. Have you learned how to tie the Dropper Loop yet?? That knot will be strong enough and help you to set your hooks in the right zones for the fish.[cool] [signature] Re: [tubeN2] Help on huntington beach pier - Fish_Slayer - 01-12-2008 Alight i will try next time i get one. I went last night. i tried all over. from the life guard tower to the restaurant. I only got one more ray, a crab, and missed bites. I am not doing very well. i tried some smaller tube jigs and i tried a little piece of squid with a weight in all kinds of depths. i just cant seem to figure it out. I went to a fishing and hunting place yesterday to look for a muscle hook thing but they did not have them. they told me to try the big fish tackle shop so ill be heading over there later today to look for one. I fished from 5ish to 10 [signature] Re: [Fish_Slayer] Help on huntington beach pier - tubeN2 - 01-12-2008 There doesn't seem to be as much activity on the early waxing crescent. That pier tends to fish better on the outgoing tide during the early and late stages of the moon. Incoming tide is better from 1st quarter through last quarter and with the New Moon phase. At this time of year, more of your fish will be in the surfline or just behind it. Others will be near the pilings of the pier and the other reef that I mentioned to you.[cool] [signature] Re: [tubeN2] Help on huntington beach pier - Fish_Slayer - 01-12-2008 Thanks for the help. If i end up catching some more fish ill post up some pictures. [signature] Re: [Fish_Slayer] Help on huntington beach pier - tubeN2 - 01-12-2008 No problem bro. There is a section on these boards that give you all the tide information and stuff that is important to fishing.[cool] [url "http://weather.bigfishtackle.com/index.php?config=&forecast=zandh&pands=huntington+beach&Submit=GO"]Click here to access[/url] [signature] |
