I'm glad people are thinking about these things. Conservation and the well being of the fish population should be a concern of every angler.

I think maybe they have to look at the bigger bigger picture here though and not just focus on one or two years in a certain geographic area. Lake Michigan is a HUGE lake and I don't think it's enough of a sample to draw good conclusions on the entire lake just yet.

As far as the "less is more" question....... hmmmm... would I rather catch more smaller fish or catch only a few big ones??? Not really sure, do they taste the same? [Tongue] Do I get to keep more of the little ones? How many "big ones" can I catch? It would stink to go fishing and only be able to catch one or two fish and have to go home.

I'm all for conservation for deer hunting and letting the spike and 4 pointers go on and mature before harvesting. But all the 4 year old salmon are all going to die anyway.. so it's not really the same thing.

Not sure.... thoughts anyone?

Well , if the number of fish decrease , there will be more competition among the river anglers and the charter boats . Commercial fishing could wipe everything out for all .
Charter boats should do well as long as their numbers do not increase too much .
River anglers , thats a whole new ballgame .
The gauntlet , first the fish get past the Commercial nets placed around the rivers mouth , then the Mi.D.N.R. weirs , face it , those weirs cut off a large majority of the spawning fish , too many in my opinion .
Then there are the snaggers , way too many snaggers .
Finally us guys that actually do fish the right way .
I'm all in favor of bigger fish but the number of fish taken at the weir and by Commercial fishing boats should also be reduced to reflect the downsized quantizes of fish available in the habitat .
Snaggers (poachers ) fines should be increased heavily, I don't think $1000.00 a fish would be asking too much , it would send a clear cut message thruout the state that the practice of snagging will not be tolerated at all .
I'm in favor of reduced numbers for a more balanced healthier fish population .
