purana established in great lakes - davetclown - 06-26-2006

no joke guys, this is for real.

saturday an angler pulled up a paku off the board walk of the rouge river saturday.

it measured to a near 18 inches.

a paku (check spelling) is the cousin of the purana from the same regeon.

These fish have found a way to survive year round in michigans cold ice flowing waters. It would apear that there is a number of plants on michigan shores along with canida and wisconson shores that use water for cooling wich when returned back to the sorce it tempretur is highly elivated to tropical standards. thus providing a habitat for tropical fish....

news reporters are placing the blaim on fish shops for releasing them, others are blaiming pet owners for just turning thier dogs loose in the wild. This reminds me of when I was a kid and that was how a number of poeple would discard an unwanted pet. take them out in to the country side turn them loose and make them some one elses problem....

my question is, what happens in fifty years when these fish learn to how to addapt to colder waters of the great lakes.

Puranas have been reported being caught near most all these water tempriture raising plants all though the great lakes..

This doesn't surprise me at all.. I've seen some of the local lake go from no muskie at all to being over run with muskie in a matter of a few years.. Seeing these fish adapt and survive in colder waters is just a small step it seems to me..

And I'm heading up to Lake Michigan next month for some salmon fishing.. May have to take a run near Cook Nuclear plant (if we can get close enough) and see what's out there..

I'll try to recall the facts a little bit here , 2 or 3 years ago we posted a topic on the Michigan board about the increasing number of Pirana that were being cought at the base of dams on Michigan rivers and at the hot water outlets of powerplants adjoining the great lakes waters .
The Television news story at that time was when a 12 year old youngster pulled in a 8" or 9" piranah at the base of a dam in early November .
I don't think it would take much to eradicate the fish , shut a couple of the power plants down for a day or two here or there and let the natural cold tempratures kill them off during the winter months .
With our power all conected in a grid , it wouldn't cause any inconvienance to end users , but for the guys collecting all the cash for making the power , hey, your hitting them in the wallet .
I guess nothing will be done untill the piranah cross bread with another fish and start wiping out a few people , by then it will be too late to do anything about it .

I remember you posting this story once before,

but since the fish has grown to a wopping 17 inches I thought it might need be repeated.

I remember the news stating at that time that the fish could not survive the winters here, but now they have changed their minds and found that they can survive, and just like the movie the lost world of jerasic park not only can the survive but if given the opertunity they can find a way to aclimate in areas if given a long enough time period.

I dont think we will see the power plants getting shut down any time soon, to foot the bill the state dnr would have to pay out many dead nonpresidents a couple hundred folds over and over.

needless to say we have people disipearing in our waters every year never to be found again... could it be a perana? could it be a big Cat fish? could it be cow stealing aliens? that is anybodys guess.... but it leaves room for wonder
