Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 12-30-2005 [cool][#0000ff]Finished my final tubing trip of the year at Yuba and stopped by Lincoln Beach on the way home. The main launch area has ice, but not much. Open around the edges and soft out further. Two guys stopped down to fish off the docks but left pretty quickly.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Open water off the end of the south jetty. I could have launched my tube and probably caught some whities, but I had already overfunned in the cold water for the day. Still a lot of thin ice on the lake, but it looks pretty skinny.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Bird Island was a white mound in the distance. It looks like it got a lot of ice stacked up on it during a blow. There were several spots along the south shoreline of Lincoln Beach that had some six foot high stacks of 4" thick ice too.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The "L" was liquid, but the old launch channel was full of blown in ice, and the outside was a pretty good stack of ice. Looking west, from the L, the whole south shoreline seemed to be jammed with wind blown ice. It will be awhile before anyone is wading for wallies there.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]On a positive note, the water keeps rising in Utah Lake. It is already at the high water mark for last year, and we still have several good runoff months ahead of us. Who knows how high the old mud puddle will get this year. More good spawning I hope.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - BassAckward - 12-30-2005 i love the pics of the ice blown up on the shore. I have never seen that before looks realy cool dude ! [signature] Re: [BassAckward] Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 12-30-2005 [cool][#0000ff]You're still working on journeyman ice angler status, so that is something you are likely to see at times. It is really awesome when the ice has been 10 or 12 inches thick and then a major blow tears it up and pushes tons of it all on one shoreline. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Up on Bear Lake, it has happened that a foot thick sheet of ice blows up and layers over itself for a long ways. Then, when BLM shows up with his power auger, he has two feet of ice to punch through. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I almost got caught in an "ice stack" on Starvation one year in February. Launched my tube near the dam, to fish along the edge of the ice as soon as there was some open water. An offshore breeze blew a large sheet of ice out into the lake and I followed for a ways, catching some nice brown trout right at the edge.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I headed back toward shore when I got a ways out, casting as I went. I noticed a change in the direction of the breeze...blowing right back toward the dam. I thought "This can't be good." I was right.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]One edge of the windblown ice sheet caught on a point and I witnessed how much power was behind it. It piled up and rolled up over itself. I kicked in the afterburner on my tube and threw a roostertail to the corner, where the dam met the sandy slope. As soon as I "touched down", I jumped out of my donut and hauled (my gear) up the hill as fast as I could go. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Not 30 seconds after I was safely off to the side and up out of the way, the ice sheet hit the rocks of the dam and started shooting up the slope. Pieces were breaking off and rolling over each other, but if I had been caught in the middle, between the ice and the rocks... Can you say tubeburger?[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Yeah, the foot pounds and the total force of a large sheet of ice pushed by the wind can do some nasty stuff. I do not recommend that anyone test that theory.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - CROSSINEYES - 12-31-2005 o those stacks bring back memories of the good old days. i remmeber climbing over 12 ft stacks to reach open water for erly eyes. [signature] Re: [CROSSINEYES] Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 12-31-2005 [cool][#0000ff]Yeah, me too. But not without ice cleats. I just about did a triple klutz today while standing on a piece of that stuff to take a picture. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Oh look, Mommy, that funny old man thinks he is trying out for the Olympics.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Are we going to meet up for some prespawn checkouts down there in a couple of months?[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - utwalleye - 12-31-2005 cool pic's Pat, I remember seeing that a few times, it's always cool looking when it stacks up like that. you bet I will be down there for some early eye opening. if the water is up good this year I just might have to hit the bubble up again. I do miss fishing that place, I haven't fished it for 5 years. later chuck [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - Out4Trout - 12-31-2005 [cool]Nice work, Pat! Can't wait to chase some 'eyes there in a couple of months. I'm going to catch more than just one of them this year, but hey, at least I broke my 'eye skunk (barely) in '05. Next year I'm going to catch me a few 5 lbers, and hopefully a bigger one than that too!! I think actually having a decent fish finder should help me with that at least a little bit now. As you always say, "you can't catch the fishies where they ain't!" [signature] Re: [utwalleye] Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 12-31-2005 [cool][#0000ff]The 'eyes were there (BU) last year in numbers, size and quality last year, and the water was about 7' deep at the far buoy at high water. It has to be close to that right now, and should get deeper still before spring runoff is over.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]There were also lots of eyes all along that whole end of the lake this last year. You know about the creek. They were also good around the harbor...inside and out. And, we caught more than a few while casting both plastics and bait for catfish, north and south of Lindon Harbor. I saw quite a few caught by other guys casting spinners or jigs for white bass.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Let's watch the weather and water temps and hope there are some healthy fish for us this year.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [Out4Trout] Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 12-31-2005 [cool][#0000ff]Hey Geoff, there is an old proverb that says that the progression of a fisherman goes:[/#0000ff] [#0000ff]1. To catch a fish.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff]2. To catch a big fish.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff]3. To catch a LOT of big fish.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]That is definitely the way it goes with your elusive quarry, the walleye. And, even when you think you have learned enough (and caught enough fish) to have earned walleye master status, you can still get humbled.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Ahhhh, Grasshopper, you have studied your lessons well. You talk the talk and have demonstrated increasing prowess upon the water. Now you must translate your passion into success. I look into my "seeing device" (an aquarium full of swimming minnows) and I predict that this is your year...the year of the walleye.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Since you now live closer to Willard, we will resume your training at that venue. I used to do very well around the South Marina up there through May and June, from my tube. Plus there are plenty of kitties and wipers to keep us busy while practicing for wallies.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - Out4Trout - 01-01-2006 [cool]I'm looking VERY forward to the softwater this coming Spring/Summer, Sensai. Fishing the South marina at Willard sounds like a lot of fun. Haven't been there yet, only the North one. I hope to indeed get a few nice 'eyes this year, but as far as the South marina goes, I'd just be quite happy catching a few crappies. Never caught one before. Hope to change that this year. It's cool that you are going to at least semi-retire, as that will get you more quality time out on the waters, and with your better half too. It's gonna be a GREAT year!! [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach Driveby - acey - 01-01-2006 Oh Great One- you did not say anything about Yuba. Did you do any catching there? Was there ice or open water? Acey [signature] Re: [acey] Lincoln Beach Driveby - TubeDude - 01-01-2006 [cool][#0000ff]I did a separate post on that one,[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff][url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=235272;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread"](LINK TO YUBA TRIP POST)[/url][/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]In a nutshell, the lake is completely open, with surface temp of 37 degrees. No fish on sonar in the dam area, until I got out to the middle of the old channel at 65 feet. Then I saw a few small fish at mid depth and some more near the bottom. Got two light taps on the bottom in 65 feet.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I suspect that the big rainbows are moving up toward the Sevier River inlet. They are not able to spawn successfully in the silty river (no gravel) but they do develop eggs and milt and have the biological urge to give it a try. Most of the fish caught in the previous couple of months have been full of roe and milt, and the males have developed the hooked jaws and spawning colors.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]The water level is way up, almost to spill level. There should be plenty of flooded vegetation for the perch to spawn. In fact, some of last years weeds and brush is already disappearing below the water line, in addition to all the stuff that grew during the low water of the drought.[/#0000ff] [signature] |
