Preston area Ice - JoyRide - 12-13-2005

I took a drive yesterday to see which ponds were ready to ice fish. I checked Oneida, Treasureton, Winder, Foster and Glendale. Everything was frozen with the exception of Oneida's inlet and main channel to just above the Hot Springs where I walked abot 200 ft toward the channel and tried to throw a ten pound rock through the ice with no result but a chip. I drove on up the river trying to find a place to launch the little boat into the clear channel with no success. I guess it's ice fishing season.

I just recieved an email from a fella in the Logan area. He was saying that parts of Cutler stay clear all winter and you can launch a small boat around the Benson area. Any one know about this?

Re: [JoyRide] Preston area Ice - KJFN - 12-14-2005

Don,

I have not been to Benson lately so I don't know if things are frozen up are not. I do know everything will freeze up if it gets cold enough. Usually it is in the -20 F region. I have crossed the Bear River at Trenton and it has ice is some spots but not in others.

If you are going to try to get a boat in at Benson your best bet would be just North of the Benson church. To get there from Logan you would go to the light at approx. 2500 North and go west. This takes you past the Logan Cache airport and into Benson. Stay left at the Y in Benson. Darrells appliance will be on your left just before the Y, the Benson church is about 1/2 mile from Darrells and will be on your right. At the church go right about another 1/4 mile. Just before you cross the bridge, on your right, there is a small launch area into the main channel of the Bear River. I think that will be your best shot.

Man ... I wish I had waited a day to go look at Cutler. I dragged that poor little boat all over Cache Valley. I checked the Newton ramp, Benson ramp, some Swamp ramp (North?) and the Little Bear and saw very little open water.

I headed out to go find the Bear and Logan River inlets, but got side tracked and ended up at Porcupine LOL ! It is icing up at the inlet with most of the lake on the dam end still open. I think I read somewhere (Utah Proc ?) that boats are not allowed at this lake ... or is it just motorized boats? That'd be a damn shame as most of the shoreline is inaccessible.

Sorry so much on Utah waters ...

Where is the ramp?

There really isn't a ramp at Porcupine- there are areas 1/2 way around and at the east end. It really isn't a bad thing.

As has been said, "there is not a ramp at Porcupine". It is open to boats but I think there is a sign that says at wakeless speeds only. The only way to launch is to have a small enough boat to hand launch it. There are a couple of spots (in good weather) where you can get close enough to the lake to do this and you would want to have a 4X4 outfit as well.

Guess I should have called this thread "Cache Valley Ice". Thanks for helping out.

You will definately want a 4x4. Maybe sometime next year i can take you out there. I used to fish it a lot and have some success there.
