Flaming Gorge HOT update - sockeyeslayer - 07-17-2005

Well the lake is finally clearing since it turned over in the last two week's and the temp's are HOTTER then ever...96 degrees while we were there last weekend. We fished Thursday night and ran into three noteworthy Kokes 5.3 lb's being the largest caught on a green Cripplure behind 2 green sling blades at 70 feet. The other 2 were 4 3/4 lb.s and just over 4 with alot that we threw back in the 2-2.5 pound range. Friday mourning we hit another nice Koke that just missed 5 pound's it went 4 pound's 14 ounces and it fought better then any other we caught we also hit 11 more before 7:30 am when it slowed almost to a stop and by late afternoon my Dad had begun to get sick due to the sun/heat exposure...We left at around 4:30 pm but not before running into fishonlynch and "dan" which it was good to see some BFT'er's . Another noteworthy comment the 2 biggest fish that we caught were already starting to hook a little and getting their front teeth so I guess they might be starting a little early this year... The hot bait's this weekend were the Green Cripplure, The Pink pee-wee Hootchie and the new pink / black spotted tasmanian devil. The fish we caught were all between 40- 75 feet but primarily holding from 50 -60 feet with the lower Pipeline area and brinager's ranch being the most successful area's

Happy Fishing

[black]WOW! What nice fish you hooked into this weekend. At what speeds were you trolling? Thanks for the continued great reports from the Gorge. I'm not normally a koke guy but after reading your reports and seeing the pics all season, I had to try when we were there a week ago. We had a great time catching kokes in the 3 to 3-1/2 lb range using the techniques you've shared. Thanks.[/black]

Sounds like you had the same kind of a trip that i had last time out.Good to know the school around bringears is still feeding and they havent moved much.Seems to me that the bigger kokes i have been catching are coming from another location ,less fish there but they are bigger .Glad to hear the water is clearing,it was very unusual for the lake to turn in the summer,i think it was due to the wet spring that we had.Is the lake level still coming up?

Hope you dad makes a full recovery,i had to watch my dad real close when i use to take him ,as the same thing would happen.

When is the best time to catch kokanee at the Gorge? I have never tried it before.

Another great report. Thanks Jared. Do you ever run into the "PooreHouse" out there fishin'? Rick is an uncle and puts in a lot of time up there.

The best times that i have found are from about the middle of may til about the end of aug. They will usually start to "turn" about the middle of aug,but as sockeyeslayer said ,some that he caught were starting to turn already.

The gorge has two different species of kokanee,i dont remember what they are ,but i do know one species will usually start to spawn in sept, and the other in oct.I usually fish for kokes til the end of aug ,then will fish for something else, big browns or bow's.

I dont know the capt of the poorhouse ,but i hear him on the VHF from time to time,he seems to know alot of people on the gorge.

Re: [sockeyeslayer] Flaming Gorge HOT update - Lundman - 07-18-2005

First Gorge trip this year...

Hit the Gorge on a early Saturday Morning trip - left here at 4 a.m. and launching by 7:30 and fishing by 8:15 at the pipeline.

The ladies at the Lucerne marina said that the state record was broken Friday by a nice little girl. They said her father was going to clean it but they weighed it at 7 lbs. They DID have a picture. They said it was caught at the pipeline. They also said what the hot colors were.....

Well it took about 90 minutes to figure out what was going on. All of last years "go-to" lures were catching the little boys. I did see other boats catching the little guys also and changed my tactics.

Final result of 2 days of fishing was 9 keepers - one 4.5, three 4's and 6 in the 3+ lb. range.

The bigger fish did seem to come from 60 to 65 depth range.

Many 12" to 15" macks caught and released. Most on the upper pole on a stacked downrigger.

Lessons learned:

I had a new dodger that out-produced the other ones - 3 to one.

Little dodges only produced one little fish - go big or go home empty handed.

Stacker clips sink really fast - got to get some more....

I'm going back up in two weeks -

Re: [Lundman] Flaming Gorge HOT update - sockeyeslayer - 07-18-2005

I saw the photo that was taken and I was hard pressed to believe that it went 7 pound's it looked more like a mid 5 pound fish ...but then I have never claimed to be a doctor of reading photograph's...none the less it was a great fish that I was told was caught on one of my dodger set up's (whatever that's supposed to mean) I to went bigger on some dodger's ( 8 inch ) and had more success with the big boy's.
Thank's for the report

I just got off the phone with the wyo game and fish office here in green river. The woman told me that their office hasn't heard anything about this, and they would of had to been the one 's to varify if it was a record or not.

Sounds like a fun trip. The size of kokes being caught this year are pretty decent sized.

Have fun in 2 weeks. Should be nice and HOT. Smile

Re: [kokeking] Flaming Gorge HOT update - sockeyeslayer - 07-19-2005

My point exactly!!! The story I heard was that they weighed it on a non- digital scale and that it was seven pounds and that they were just giong to fillet and eat it???? If it was a state record I doubt that the filleting would have occured!!
Thank's for checking

Re: [sockeyeslayer] Flaming Gorge HOT update - fishonlynch - 07-21-2005

My dad and I fished the gorge fri, sat, and sun (july 15, 16 & 17). We met Jared and his dad in front of the ranch house and kept in touch on the radio. Thanks to Jared's advice we found the kokes fast. We tried a few other places, but only caught small kokes and little lakers. We found that red lures and green lures worked best. We caught fish at depths of 35-60 ft. Our largest fish was about 3 1/2 lbs. They sure are fun to catch with light poles/tackle off downrigger balls. We put in at Lucerne Sunday morning to try some of our favorite spots without any luck. The wind blew a lot Sunday cooling things off, but making fishing difficult. -fishonlynch
