3/4 Day Premier 6/10 Horseshoe Kelp Trip - JapanRon - 06-11-2005 Hey there guys, Fished the 3/4 day boat Premier today. Danny ran the boat and Mikie decked Got some killer anchovies and looked forward to getting those 8-9 pound barracuda. Great cuda weather with it being overcast and a slight chop at Horseshoe Kelp. We targeted bass and barracuda on this trip. First off...the barracuda bite didn't really kick in during the morning for us like the last week or so did! Those guys were soooo picky! Swimbaits didn't do it, Jigs didn't do it.... although there were lots of short strikes. No consistant color got the majority of hits. Bait was the ticket for getting the slimesticks interest. Raked baits that would make a halibut green with envy kept us busy on trips to the bait tank. The afternoon barracuda bite didn't materialize for us. Except..... heh heh heh I caught an OK cuda for jackpot. On a 20lb outfit, I used a leader of about four feet of fluro with 1/4oz egg sinker flylined. Boy it was a long dry spell. The good news was the nice mix of calicos and the growing numbers of sandies. Yes .... I get the feeling that our local, resident sand bass are coming out and getting into shape for when the party really starts. Bass bit throughout the day (sure saved the day) but again they were mostly bait fish. The usual routine of dropper loop, Carolina, Texas rigs did the trick. Largest bass maybe 4lbs. A monster sculpin was caught (among others) but they was saved by being out of season. Very few birds seen diving so the schools were tough to locate. Sea lions were not too much of an annoyance. Anglers had plenty of filets to take home. Great weather, boat, and crew. JapanRon [signature] |
