Anglers should look forward to excellent fall trout fishing. DEP begins its annual Fall Stocking Program this Friday and, thanks to a mild summer, there are exceptional numbers of holdover trout from previous stockings. In the next two weeks, more than 47,000 adult-size trout will be stocked into 20 rivers and streams and 30 lakes and ponds throughout the state.
Rivers & Streams - Some of the best action of the year will be during the next 5 weeks. Anglers can expect aggressive trout to take streamers with explosive action. Try white, yellow & brown colors. Patterns to try include: White, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10). Good weather should result in fishable conditions by the weekend. The Farmington River is currently 65°F with relatively unfishable flows downstream of Riverton (950 cfs). Flows should decline to fishable levels by the weekend. Successful patterns include Isonychia (#12-14, fast water, evening), Blue Wing Olives (#16-20, mid-late afternoon), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Midges (#22-32, morning), Black Ants (#14-20, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid), Stone Hopper (#8-12, mid day) and Golden Drake (Potomanthus, #10-14, late evening). The Housatonic River is currently 62°F with 4,500 cfs of turbid flows. Until flows recede and the river is fishable, anglers should try the tributaries, which should provide good fishing. Insect hatches include: Blue Wing Olive (#18-22, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Isonychia (#12-14 evening), and Black caddis (#16-20, early morning & evening). Golden stonefly nymphs hatch at first light and adults egg-lay after dark. Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day), Stone Hopper (#8-10, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid). Areas to try this weekend include: the Wharton Brook and Sleeping Giant Trout Parks.
Lakes & Ponds Lakes reporting good trout fishing include: West Hill Pond, and East Twin, Highland and Wonoscopomuc Lakes.
BASS fishing is variable, ranging from very slow to good. Connecticut RiverBLACK CRAPPIE are providing some excellent fall action on jigs in the coves of the lower river. STRIPED BASS action in the lower river is very good just after dark as the hickory shad have moved into river. NORTHERN PIKE fishing is reported as good. Best reported action from Chapman’s Pond to Salmon River Cove, also some catches in the Enfield area.. LARGEMOUTH BASS and SMALLMOUTH BASS fishing reported to be slow. For CATFISH, try cut bait in the deeper holes and on the outside edges of the river. [#004080]MARINE REPORT[/#004080]
