Oregon Fishing Update - TGF - 07-03-2004 Oregon Fisheries Update July 2nd – July 8th, 2004 With another modified sturgeon season in our midst, anglers will want to take full advantage of technical report #3- Columbia River Estuary Sturgeon Fishing and while you are at it, get a copy of technical report #4- Columbia River Estuary Salmon Fishing for the Bank and Boat Angler for the upcoming Buoy 10 season! Both reports are available from our secured web page here. Sturgeon fishing is CLOSING after Saturday, July 3rd for keepers in the estuary downstream of the Wauna powerlines. ODF&W personnel estimate that the quota will have been met for this section of the river and therefore will be open to catch and release fishing only for the remainder of the season. The greatest effort is taking place from the Hammond Boat Ramp but water above Tongue Point has also been productive. Deeper water continues to provide some of the better opportunity but keepers can be had on the sand flats with the upcoming high tides we will be experiencing. Steelhead fishing from the lower Columbia River beaches should be good over the weekend with the large minus tide series we will be having. Gorge sturgeon fishing remains relatively slow although the majority of shad have passed Bonneville which could put oversize back on the bite as their food source dwindles. Keepers are still a bit hard to find with any consistency but eel is a strong bait for those wanting to participate in this fishery for meat. The summer Chinook run is entering its peak weeks and Bonneville fishing should only get better this week- especially towards the end of the reporting week as the minus tide series will draw fish into the lower reaches. Although coastal streams are low and clear, an extreme tidal series will encourage fresh summer steelhead to enter. Stealth tactics, small lures and long, light leaders are recommended. South coast anglers are experiencing excellent smallmouth bass fishing on the Umpqua where the shad angling is holding up as the run winds down. The summer steelhead run is just starting. Springers are running up the Rogue with the best fishing in the upper river. The spring chinook run has been late but summer steelhead are entering early. The Clackamas has been fishing well for late-season springers. Summer steelhead fishing is good. The Sandy River which suffered from seasonal glacial milkiness last week, has improved slightly. Summer steelhead fishing on the North Santiam has been very good. A strong population of springers and steelhead is present in the Santiam system. Summer trout and kokanee fishing is excellent in various locations around Oregon. Locations stocked with trout this week include Town Lake, Fish Lake , Rogue River, Clearwater #2, Diamond Lake, Lemolo Reservoir, Big Cultus, Cent Gravel Pit, Deschutes #5, Devils Lake, East Lake, Fall River , Horseshoe Lake , Lake of the Woods , Lost Lake , North Twin, Olallie Lake , Shelvin, Sprague Pit, Spring Creek, Three Creeks, and Walton Lake.
