Wiper Fishing 101 - NealCO - 05-22-2004

For years I have been hearing about the great warm water fishing at Swanson and Red Willow reservoirs in SW Nebraska, Especially for Wiper and White Bass. I even saw write up about them in Infisherman.

About six months ago I found a website for Steve Lytle who is a full time guide on those lakes. He has set the Nebraska state record for Wiper five times, including a 20 lber!

Goto http://stevelytle.com/ and click on fishing reports. There you will find his client log for the last three years. Click on the month you are interested in and he gives a daily log for that month. He gives what they caught, water temp. lure selection, what kind of structure and depth. If you look at the the logs from each year you can see the same patterns over and over again! His log book is like a text book on how to catch Wipers!!!!!

I am going to try to treat myself to a couple of days of his service this fall. He seems very reasonablly prised.

[cool] Thanks, Neal.

That's a very helpful site. I've been reading about that guide and those lakes for a few years, too, although I had not seen the logbook part of his site. I'm gonna be real interested in what you think after your trip. I'm treating myself to a couple of days in July with a laker guide on Flaming Gorge. I think it will be money well spent in learning some new techniques, etc.

I hope you have a great trip. I think I'm gonna go hit Chatfield for a while at o-dark-thirty tomorrow and see if I can find a few smallmouth and walleyes. I'll post if I do any good. Thanks for the post.

Nice find Neal[Wink]

Looks like the wiper fisheries out there, and at Swanson in particular are world class. I can't imagine catching 27 wiper between 24-30 inches. Heck I'd be more than happy if I catch that many all season.

From what I have heard and read on that site, he mostly guides on Red Willow. I guess Red Willow is where all the big Wipers he has caught (15 lbs and over come from). Swnason is bigger (5000 acres) and is better for shear numbers of wipers and lots of walleye. It also has huge Flatheads! Swanson and Red Willow are also stocked with Pike. There is another smaller lake in the chain there called Enders and it is supposed to be good for walleye?

I actually saw a show on TV along time ago where they were fishing on Red Willow for Wipers in the fall. They caught some scary sized fish!

I can't imagine catching that many big fish in one day. Those lakes must be super charged. I've been out to the Pueblo res a few more times and the action has been pretty consistent. Catching a few walleye and wiper each time, but still haven't had an exceptional night. The top water action is really starting to heat up, i've been getting a lot of wiper to come up and hit the bait but not fully commit.

Hey Neal-

A couple of the guys over on the Utah board just got back from fishing with Steve Lytle. I'm going to try to post a link to that thread. If it doesn't work, the thread is titled something like "New state record wiper?" Here's my attempt at posting the link to the thread:

Don't know if it will work.
